The Role
The Benefits and Compensation Manager will be responsible for developing and administering the Times’ benefits and compensation programs to help increase staff performance and well-being. The position is a very hands-on role and will be located at our office in downtown St. Petersburg, FL.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers and refines benefits programs to provide maximum coverage to staff at a reasonable cost to the company. Decisions are reached through careful plan analysis and review of market and healthcare trends.
  • Works with vendors and carriers to ensure plans are properly administered and staffer problems are resolved.
  • Ensures contracts are negotiated to protect the Times’ interests.
  • Oversees eligibility data transfers with various plan administrators.
  • Responsible for the ongoing communication of company benefits.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal benefit laws, including ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, IRC Section 125, FMLA.  Responsible for recommendation of plan compliance resolution and subsequent completion of necessary actions where deficiencies are found.
  • Provides auditors with necessary information to complete benefit plan audits.  Responsible for review and completion of 5500’s completed by auditors.  Also completes 5500 filings for non-audited fringe benefit plans.
  • Manages Annual Open Enrollment of benefits programs.
  • Oversees leave and disability programs, including FMLA, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability.
  • Assists staffers regarding benefits changes and family status changes.
  • Assists staffers with retirement information.
  • Analyzes compensation systems and pay practices and designs strategies that further the Times’ business objectives.
  • Conducts salary and labor market surveys to determine prevailing pay rates and benefits.
  • Provides advice to managers around pay decisions.
  • Researches and understands emerging pay trends and best practices.
  • Ensures compliance with FLSA and Wage and Hour requirements.
  • Creates grade and job classifications.

Education and/or Experience
  • Thorough knowledge of benefit programs and their administration required. Knowledge of compensation programs and administration preferred or the desire to learn compensation. Must be familiar with all applicable regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of HRIS functions and capabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of HR recordkeeping requirements.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in benefits management with a concentration in hands-on benefits planning & analysis and HR systems.
  • Ability to handle tactical day-to-day operations as well as strategic planning and analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
